Abstract: The case describes how L&T, an Indian multinational providing technology, engineering, construction, manufacturing, and financial services, emphasized the adoption of digital technologies to drive growth and create a sustainable competitive advantage for itself. The company was spread across different verticals and needed to ensure that its diverse workforce was equipped with the most relevant skills to be future-ready. As part of its five-year strategic plan ‘Lakshya 2021’ and long-term plan ‘Perspective – 2026’, L&T stressed digitalization of learning, competency development, and upskilling as key themes. The objective was to impart training to the entire workforce in a cost-effective manner.

The case then looks into how L&T launched a Learning Experience Platform (LXP) – “ATLNext” powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies in 2016. The smart platform empowered employees with actionable data-driven insights to upskill and enhance their competencies.

The case also describes another digital HR initiative that L&T adopted for its business unit L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (LTMRHL) in 2019. In collaboration with Darwinbox, LTMRHL implemented the cloud-based HRM system for its Operations and Maintenance (O&M) partner, Keolis Hyderabad Mass Rapid Transit System Limited (KHMRTS). The case finally ends with a brief on the digital roadmap of L&T and the plans it to put in place for talent acquisition and learning management.
