Introduction: Facebook is the fourth most trafficked website in the world (Exhibit I).3 The website claims to have more than 200 million active users, of which more than 100 million login at least once each day. According to, 19 percent of global internet users visit Facebook everyday and spend an average of 25 minutes on the site. More than 4 billion minutes are spent on the site each day worldwide according to Facebook and more than 30 million users update their statuses at least once each day (Exhibit II ). 4 More than two-thirds of Facebook users are outside of college and the fastest growing demographic is those 35 years old and older. An average user has 120 friends on the site and more than 6 million users become fans of Pages each day. More than 850 million photos and more than 10 million videos are uploaded to the site each month. More than 1 billion pieces of content such as web links, news stories, blog posts, notes and photos are shared each week on Facebook. More than 2.5 million events are created each month and more than 30 million active user groups exist on the site. About 70% of Facebook users are outside the US and more than 50 translations are available on the site. Facebook is a part of millions of people’s lives all around the world (Exhibit III) providing unparalleled distribution potential for applications and the opportunity to build a business that is highly relevant to people’s lives. The Facebook Platform and Facebook Connect enable marketers and engineers to deeply integrate with the Facebook website and gain access to millions of users through the social graph. The rapidly growing member base of more than 200,000,000 people and Facebook’s various marketing tools have combined to make Facebook an excellent direct and online marketing channel.
