Vélib' - Design and Aesthetics

The Vélib' debuted in Paris on July 15, 2007. The name Vélib' was derived from Velo meaning bike and liberte meaning freedom. The Vélib' system consisted of bicycles, a rack for coupling the bike, and an electronic kiosk with an interactive terminal (Refer to Exhibit III for components of the Vélib' system). The electronic kiosks communicated using the GPRS service...

The Operating Model

The main activities in setting up the Vélib' system were setting up the station, bike installation and maintenance, and setting up of the terminal. The bikes needed an excavation and electrical hook-up for their installation. They were maintained and repaired on a daily basis...
