"Overall, we are a strong Australian company with a good
business outlook and sound stock performance. We are not a business which has
achieved success by standing still. Building a world-class company takes time
and effort and it was pleasing to have our hard work rewarded by being the first
Australian company to break into the top-25 list of world retailers."1
- Michael Luscombe, MD and CEO Woolworths
Limited, in 2008.
Introduction
In 2008, Woolworths Limited (Woolworths), Australia's leading retailer, became
the first Australian company to break into the top 25 global retailers list.
According to the 2008 Global Powers of Retailing report released by Deloitte2,
Woolworths was placed at the 25th position in the list of top 250 retailers
globally for the year 2006/2007 (Refer to Exhibit I for the Top 25 Retailers in
the world). Another Australian retailer and Woolworths competitor Coles Group3
was at the 31st position.
