Background Note
Dr. Anji Reddy, Chairman of Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and founder of DRFHSD was born in an agriculturist family.
He did his graduation in pharmacology and doctoral studies in chemical engineering from Bombay University.
After obtaining his doctorate, he came back to Hyderabad and in 1960, joined Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (IDPL)3 as a scientist. He established Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (DRL) in 1984. DRL became a public limited company in 1985.
During the 1990s, the company consolidated its position in the domestic formulations market through aggressive product launches as well as acquisitions. In 1993, DRL started focusing on research activities and by 1996 it began reporting good profits.
|
|
At DRL's Annual General Meeting in 1996, a minority shareholder's query drew Dr. Reddy's attention towards social responsibility. At about the same time, Dr. Reddy met Nalini Gangadharan who was working with Ashoka Foundation, an NGO.4
|
In 1996, Dr. Reddy set up DRFHSD, with Nalini taking over as the Executive Director. DRFHSD focused on 'poverty alleviation' targeting children, youth and women.
DRFHSD's philosophy: "The Foundation assumes the role of a catalyst in a chemical reaction. It promotes conditions that lead to desired results. It is the forum for pooling ideas from the best of minds in our society to better design the social experiments woven through appropriate networks and resources by foundation."5
The Foundation derived its guiding principles, and they were
termed the three pillars of the foundation (Refer Table I)... |
